Implementation of Jo Hamilton’s Assertiveness Skills in School Settings

Feedback from St John’s Preparatory School

St John’s Prep has spent 11 weeks exploring the 20 assertiveness tools contained in Jo Hamilton’s book – The Ultimate Assertiveness Toolbox for Kids. The book sets out the tools in an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand and easy-to-interact-with manner. The tools were presented to the boys weekly, two at a time, through a simple video explaining the two tools of the week. Each teacher has a copy of the book and, after watching the video with the class, was able to facilitate discussions and further explain the tools. We have created several ‘corridors of assertiveness’ where boys can see the posters of the tools and make them part of their own toolbox against mean kids or bullies. We have seen a decrease in minor incidents throughout the school. If an issue is raised, boys have been asked what tools they used before coming to the teacher. Where there have been bigger issues, due to their nature, there is now a clear distinction, and staff have more time to deal with these in a proper manner.

As part of making these tools second nature, we will continue to use the book through the school year. Dealing with mean kids or bullies is hard, and we need to give our boys the skills to stand up for themselves and to become more assertive.

“What a great idea! We sorely need therapeutic material aimed specifically at children, especially in South Africa, and this manual is an invaluable resource for young victims of bullying. Moreover, the assertiveness tools presented in this book will be useful for the social development of any child.”
